Methodology: The Baltimore Sun used a database from the Maryland Department of Education and analyzed the scores to get a single passing percentage for each school.

The "% passing" numbers were calculated using an average of exams in Algebra I and English 10, the two PARCC tests that are given in nearly every high school.

When 5 percent or less of the students in a grade did not pass a test, the exact numbers were not provided by the state in order to avoid revealing identifying information about a single student. In those cases, The Sun assumed the most optimistic pass rate. Since the values were rounded, there will be slight inaccuracies in the lowest and highest scoring schools.

The rank of some high schools may be slightly lower because the scores of their best math students aren’t included in the data. In some counties, such as Howard and Baltimore, those students are taking Algebra I in middle school. As a result, those students who are taking the class in ninth grade may have more difficulty with math in general.

Eastern Technology High School in Baltimore County, which was ranked number one for the Baltimore region, was one school that did not give the Algebra I because all of its students had taken it in middle school. So its score is based on just the English test. When all of the high schools were ranked on English alone, Eastern Tech ranked second.
